Four ways to sign a PDF, and where each one stops

Every statement below links to the vendor’s own documentation, and every figure is a price the vendor publishes, not a struck-through list price.

The four options, and the limits of each

Preview

Free and built into macOS.

It places a picture of your signature on the page — a visual signature — but it doesn’t sign with a certificate or add a timestamp. And saving a PDF that someone already signed rewrites the whole file, so the signature stops validating: we measured it on macOS 27, and the test is written up in Preview breaks PDF signatures.

Adobe Acrobat

Reader is free. Standard is €18.30 a month in Spain on an annual plan.

The free Acrobat Reader can sign with a certificate-based digital ID (Adobe Help). The paid editions, Standard and Pro, are subscription only: “Adobe discontinued selling perpetual versions of Acrobat after Acrobat 2020,” says its pricing page. On the annual plan billed monthly, cancelling after 14 days costs up to half of the remaining commitment.

PDF Expert

Apple devices only; Lifetime is Mac only.

Readdle’s own help describes “basic electronic signature capabilities by means of a signature tool”: you type, draw or upload an image of your signature (Readdle Support). That is a visual signature; we found no Readdle page that mentions certificates. Its Lifetime plan is for the Mac only, and Readdle says “Additional new features may come at an extra cost.” There is no Windows version.

DocuSign and other e-signature services

€108 to €684 a year per user, on their Spanish storefronts.

Those tools exist to route a document to other people and collect their signatures. That’s a real need, and it isn’t this one. To sign your own documents you don’t need a subscription, an envelope quota, or a copy of your contracts on someone else’s servers.

What the alternatives cost

Nothing here is rounded in our favour or lifted from a struck-through list price. Where a vendor only publishes in one currency, we quote that currency instead of inventing a conversion.

Competitor prices checked on 14 October 2026 on each vendor’s Spanish storefront. For Acrobat, the lower figure is the prepaid annual plan and the higher one the annual plan billed monthly. On Adobe’s US page, Standard is US$179.88 a year prepaid and Pro US$239.88.

The full comparison, product by product
Prices published by each vendor, checked on 14 October 2026. Adobe, DocuSign and Signaturit figures come from their Spanish storefronts, in euros; Adobe’s include Spanish VAT, and DocuSign and Signaturit don’t say whether theirs do. Readdle’s pricing page showed us euros. The PDFsigna row is its version 1.0, which is free; Pro doesn’t exist yet and has neither a price nor a date.

Against Acrobat Standard at €216.57 a year or more, PDFsigna 1.0 signs with your certificate for nothing: up to ten documents a day, with a qualified timestamp. Against DocuSign and Signaturit the argument isn’t price at all: those are workflow platforms for collecting other people’s signatures. If you are signing your own documents, you are paying for infrastructure you may not need.

Today’s plan, and one that might follow

Free

€0

Forever

  • Full reader and annotation
  • Unlimited visual signatures
  • Unlimited signature validation
  • AcroForm form filling
  • Up to ten certificate-signed documents a day, in PAdES B-T with a qualified timestamp
  • The signature box carries one discreet line: “Signed with PDFsigna.com”

Pro

No date

Not available today. Pro is on our roadmap as a possible option, and there is no date and no price. If it happens, it would be an in-app purchase on the Mac App Store and the Microsoft Store. Treat the list as a sketch that may change; for now, PDFsigna is free.

  • Unlimited signing with a certificate
  • No “Signed with PDFsigna.com” line in the signature box
  • PAdES B-LT and B-LTA: signatures stay verifiable after the certificate expires
  • Exportable validation report
  • Unlimited signature and stamp library
  • Company stamp builder with auto-dating
  • Batch signing and initial-every-page
  • Quick actions and system automation
  • Sync across your own devices

Pro itself doesn’t exist yet, and several features on its list aren’t built either — the stamp builder, batch signing, initialling every page and the validation report among them. They are roadmap ideas, not commitments. The full list of what isn’t built is on the how-it-works page, and it is the list to read before you decide this is for you.

No fake discounts

Some PDF editors advertise “up to 91% off” their own list price. PDFsigna has no price to strike through: version 1.0 is free, and there is no checkout. If a paid plan ever comes, we intend any launch price to say when it ends.

No hidden renewals

There is nothing to renew today: version 1.0 is free and has no subscription. If a paid plan arrives, the idea is that a yearly option stays optional, the store bills it, and you’re told before paying what happens if you stop. Whatever you’ve signed stays signed either way — the signature lives in the PDF, not in the app.

Nothing is for sale today

No licence is on sale, so there is nothing paid for that could be taken away. If Pro ever exists, we’d like a one-time purchase to be perpetual and include updates. That’s an intention, not a guarantee: the actual terms would be published before anyone could buy.
